The hedge-cutting season officially reopened on September 1, marking the end of the six-month ban that protects nesting birds.
Under the Wildlife Act 1976, hedge-cutting was prohibited between March 1 and August 31 to safeguard wildlife during the critical nesting period. Now, farmers and landowners are allowed to manage their hedges and ditches again.
However, safety remains a priority. The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) reminds operators to ensure their machinery is in good working order, with all safety guards in place. Proper training and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) are essential for anyone operating hedge-cutting equipment. Farmers are also asked to ensure their workspaces are clear and safe.
