On the Factory Floor with … ABBEY MACHINERY

Abbey Machinery was established in 1947 in Nenagh, Co. Tipperary, by the Cavanagh Family. The company is a leading manufacturer of agricultural machines – in particular, slurry equipment and diet feeders. In this month’s issue of AG MAG, we caught up with Paul Beirne, a service & warranty engineer with Abbey. He kindly took time from his busy schedule to take us for a quick tour of Abbey’s factory floor. It was great to meet Paul and learn about the amazing work Abbey does, not just for Irish farms, but for farms and farmers around the world.

AG MAG: How long have you worked at Abbey Machinery?

Paul: 6 years

AG MAG: Describe what your job at Abbey involves?

Paul: My role involves supporting our dealer network and end user customers with all services related issues they may have. I am also involved in the development of new products along with my engineering colleagues. I support the sales team too – by attending trade shows, providing training and anything else they may need.

AG MAG: What kind of machines do you make at Abbey?

Paul: We make Slurry Tankers and Pumps, Applicators, Diet Feeders, Muck Spreaders, Toppers, Shakers and other implements. We even make products specifically designed for industrial use.

AG MAG: How big do you make Abbey Tanks?

Paul: We are currently making tanks up to 6,000 gallons – which is very big – about 22 thousand litres.

AG MAG: Is it hard to make an Abbey Tank?

Paul: We have a very skilled team at Abbey, so with the help of technology our team is well set up to make tankers in our factory. We use sustainable and efficient technology such as laser and plasma CNC machines and robotic welding to help us make our tankers and other Abbey products.

AG MAG: What is the smallest Abbey tank you make?

Paul: Currently the smallest tank we make is 900 gallons.

AG MAG: How far does slurry spread (Range)?

Paul: We produce Abbey applicators from 7.7m up to 12m working widths. We have a few different types of applicators, such as the Agri-Pro Trailing shoe, Premium and Premium Plus Trailing Shoe and the DM Band Spreader. These help with spreading more slurry, in less time and also reduce emissions which would otherwise get into the air.

AG MAG: Are Abbey Machines strong?

Yes, we have designed our machines to be robust and strong as this is what our customers require – this is why we have relationships with some of our machinery dealers for over 40 years! Our machines are built to last.

AG MAG: Where do you sell Abbey Products?

Paul: We have a full dealer network which we sell our machines to select Global markets. This includes Ireland, UK ,New Zealand, Australia, Iceland, Poland, Vietnam and even Saudi Arabia.

AG MAG: Do you have a farm at home? If so tell us a little about it.

Paul: Yes, I run a beef enterprise alongside my father. We buy in heifers at 14/15 months from October to March and fatten them on grass. Management of our grassland is important to try and get the most efficient growth of our animals.

AG MAG: Do you have many tanks yourself?

Paul: Yes, I have a 1600 galvanised slurry tank (from Abbey, of course) and we use it a lot on our farm. I hope to get a bigger tank like a 3000RT in the near future.

AG MAG: What is the best part of your job at Abbey?

Paul: Helping customers set up for efficient farm work. I also enjoy attending shows and getting feedback from customers on what they think of our products and how they are getting on with them.
